NHK - Clinton takes responsibility for Benghazi attack

NHK World News ---- Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai Description -- US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says she takes responsibility for the attack on the US consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi last month that killed the US ambassador and 3 other Americans. Clinton made the remarks in an interview with CNN on Monday. She stressed that President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden had not been involved in security decisions related to the consulate. The administration is under criticism, as it has come to light that the State Department did not respond to repeated requests for extra security at the consulate in the months before the attack. During Thursday's vice presidential debate, Biden said in his words, "We weren't told they wanted more security there." White House spokesman Jay Carney said Biden was referring specifically to the White House, which wouldn't receive such requests. The attack on the Benghazi consulate and the Obama administration's response to the incident have become a major issue in the November 6th presidential election. Republican candidate Mitt Romney has accused the Obama administration of not providing adequate security to US diplomats. Clinton's remarks came one day before the second presidential debate between Obama and Romney. By assuming responsibility for the incident, Clinton apparently wanted to prevent the issue from further affecting Obama's campaign. Oct. 16, 2012 - Updated 07:57 UTC (16:57 JST)
