UltraGlow® Ion Nitriding of Stamping Dies

Dr. Edward Rolinski, Advanced Heat Treat Corp., explains the UltraGlow® Ion Nitriding process for stamping dies. Advanced Heat Treat Corp. offers ion (plasma) nitriding and nitrocarburizing services for enhancing performance and durability of metal forming tools including large stamping dies. This video explains the purpose of UltraGlow® Ion Nitriding, describes the structure and hardness of the nitrided layer formed in typical stamping die materials such as gray and ductile cast irons as well as Caldie cast steel. The author describes differences between properties of nitrided layers in those materials and hard chromium plated layers. He describes why ion nitriding is superior to chromium plating in applications for tools used for the stamping auto-body parts made of TRIP, Dual Phase and other strong steels used by the industry for manufacturing modern cars. Numerous applications of ion nitriding are shown and those include large stamping dies. The UltraGlow® Ion nitriding process is shown as a very reliable process, characteristic of the high density plasma allowing for producing thicker white layers (compound zones) of nitrides at lower temperature than conventional nitriding processes. The video also explains why ion nitriding is superior over gas nitriding for processing surface porous materials such as those used for stamping dies.
