Underwear Factory Arsonist Arrested

A suspect in the arson fire of an underwear factory in south China's Guangdong Province has confessed to Chinese state-run media. The deadly blaze ripped through the factory on Tuesday (December 4) afternoon, killing 14 and injuring one. All of the victims were women. [Liu, Suspect Arsonist]: "I've never done something this serious. I didn't know the fire could be that disastrous." Surveillance camera caught the suspect, known only as Liu, entering the building before yesterday's fire. Tied to a chair in an interrogation room, Liu told state-run CCTV he started the fire because his boss owed him almost 500 dollars in back wages. The reporter later said Liu had quit the job three years ago and his boss only offered excuses instead of payment. Tuesday's blaze raged for nearly an hour before firefighters managed to put out the flames. Steel bars on the doors and windows prevented many workers from escaping. According to Xinhua, investigations are still on going. China has a poor fire safety track record. Fire escapes are often locked or blocked and safety regulations are easily skirted with bribes to corrupt officials. In 2008, a nightclub fire in Shenzhen killed 44. A senior police officer was later jailed for taking bribes to allow the unlicensed venue to stay open for business.
